The 2017-2019 Designer In Residence Program Application Is Now Open!

The Chicago Fashion Incubator Designer in Residence (DIR) is a two-year design and business development program for up to six apparel and (soft) accessories designers. The DIR are provided a creative professional environment to foster and grow their businesses. By offering low-cost design studio space, business mentoring, educational seminars, and networking opportunities, the CFI’s DIR program provides a way for designers to work with business and design mentors to assess needs; develop design and business skills, resources and networks to become an integral part of the Chicago fashion community; and develop latitudes to reach global markets. The next cycle begins March 1, 2017 through February 28, 2019.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants seeking consideration for entry to the DIR program at the Chicago Fashion Incubator must submit a FULLY COMPLETED application and pay a non-refundable $100.00 application fee, and meet all of the following criteria:

• be 21 years of age or older by the application deadline date
• design apparel and/or (soft) accessories for women and/or men
• established a main residence in the Greater Chicago area before March 1, 2017
• hold a City of Chicago business license or an application in process
• able to commit to the CFI DIR program including a minimum of 30 hours in the studio Monday – Fridayduring regular business hours
• attend scheduled 1/1 mentor sessions, seminars, and CFI media events, info sessions, and programs
• hold a Bachelor’s degree in a fashion or fashion-related field is strongly preferred

The application is open until Sunday, December 4, 2016, 4:59pm CT. Selected designers to be announced the 3rd week of January 2017.

Fashion historian Laurent Cotta tells us about “power dressing” in Paris in the 1800s while exploring an exhibition first staged at the Palais Galliera in Paris and now opening at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Laurent Cotta: Proust’s Muse, The Countess Greffulhe Élisabeth de Caraman-Chimay, the Countess Greffulhe (1860—1952), was a famous beauty celebrated for her “aristocratic and artistic elegance,” and the inspiration for the character Oriane, Duchess of Guermantes in Marcel Proust’s epic work, In Search of Lost Time. A pioneering fund-raiser, the countess was a major supporter of the Ballets Russes and her exceptional haute-couture collection included dresses signed Fortuny, Lanvin, Poiret, and Worth. Since 2002, Cotta has been responsible for contemporary creation at Musée Galliéra, the foremost museum of fashion in Paris. Thursday, September 22 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM SAIC Fashion Resource Center Sullivan Center #735 Deirdre Murphy: Gilded Butterflies: Fashion at the English Court Royalty, courtiers and guests at the British court have always worn the best clothing money could buy. This illustrated talk by Historic Royal Palaces Senior Curator Deirdre Murphy will explore how opulent materials, intricate embellishments, extreme silhouettes and exclusive, custom-made garments have distinguished the court from everyone else for centuries. Many generations have used royal and court dress as a powerful communication tool. The perpetual tension between tradition and modernity have worked to add gravitas to grand ceremonial spectacles played out on the world’s stage. Examples of royal portraiture and surviving garmnets in the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection will demonstrate how courtiers and individuals from the 10th century onward used clothes to communicate power, wealth, status, national identity and empathy with others. Founded on 21 September 2002, the museum collects, conserves, studies and exhibit Belgian fashion. Study Abroad Scholarships!

Attention:

FGI Scholarship Student Guidelines

FGI Scholarship Project Guidelines 2016

The following are guidelines established to help you during this FGI Scholarship process.  The judges will follow these guidelines when reviewing your application and projects and have been instructed to follow the 2016 forms exactly.  Should you not have paperwork that states 2016 on them, please contact your professor or department head immediately since requirements might have changed from previous years.

Notes:

• The essay should be no more than 300 words and should contain a brief description of each of the three projects
• You must have three projects submitted to qualify for any of the three (3) possible $1,000 scholarships
• The projects can be a professionally completed assignment/project/or paper completed in the last two academic years
• One of the three projects can be a freelance/work/or internship related; if completed with in the two year academic timeline
• Each project can be independent of one another
• If chosen as a winner, the items must be presented in a professional manner and identified by title or description for the RTW event to be held on December 8, 2016.

 Project Layout

 All applicants should submit all items in the following outline for review by the judges.  Those that do not place their items in the following layout will lose two (2) points from their total:

• Application with GPA
• Resume with GPA
• Cover Letter
• Portfolio with three (3) Items
• 300 Word Essay
• Two Letters of Recommendation (please note that these cannot be from the same organization, institution, or business)
  • One from a Teacher
  • One from a Professional

All FGI St. Louis applicants will receive a certificate of participation in this process.  We will also be sending back the Judges Rubric’s to the professors for awareness.  We feel that it is important for the professors to know how their students scored as well as where there is room for improvement for future applicants.

Create a collaborative collection utilizing the new technology suite in Fashion Studies and “nerd out” with Melissa. Course will include the exploration of the role of technology in the fashion industry, with an emphasis on incorporating new technology with existing fashion technologies. This course includes construction techniques, visible applications of technology in fashion design, and the use of technology to create innovative fashion applications and collections.
